Richness of Ritchie

The Richness of Ritchie Coliseum

Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with the campus community and delivering of excellent service are the keys that have unlocked the treasures of Ritchie Coliseum for all to experience. University of Maryland students and faculty/staff members are having a closer encounter with the richness of Ritchie Coliseum this spring.

Dedicated in tribute, ten squared columns stand at attention, forever saluting the honorable name of Albert C. Ritchie, former Governor of Maryland (1919 – 1934) in appreciation of his relentless efforts to marshal the cause of education in the state of Maryland.

Ritchie Coliseum was first christened in 1931 and became the home arena of the Maryland Terrapin Varsity sports teams. After the establishment of Cole Fieldhouse in 1955, Ritchie became the home of the campus’s Informal Recreation Programs and was used for campus events such as concerts, student/ campus organization activities and programs. Ritchie’s first major renovation took place in 1962 to fulfill the university’s need for a large auditorium. Just as recent as three and half years ago, July 1997, Ritchie completed another major remodeling.

Today, the historic Ritchie Coliseum, located just opposite the Rossborough Inn on Route 1, is (along with Reckord Armory) the alternative recreation facility for South Campus residents, commuters, faculty/staff, and CRS members who just want to be in a less crowded atmosphere. Holding the distinction of being one of the most unique buildings of its kind in the country, Ritchie Coliseum boasts a gymnasium with 11,000 square feet of maple hardwood flooring and a seating capacity of close to 2000. On any given Sunday, South Campus residents such as those of Frat Row and local off campus residents can be found making the most out of Ritchie’s weight/ fitness and martial arts rooms located on the lower level. Ritchie is also the home site for three ICA sports teams: women’s volleyball, men’s wrestling, and women’s gymnastics.

Lawrence Moody is the Facility Manager, South Campus Informal Recreation, which includes the management of Ritchie Coliseum and the Reckord Armory. Moody comments that, “not only is the richness of Ritchie exemplified in informal recreation, but Ritchie also facilitates numerous special events and student organization activities.” In February of 1999, former President Bill Clinton visited the University during an Americorps sponsored event held at the coliseum.

The NAACP held a dynamic Fashion Show at Ritchie in May of 1998 and it, just as the Americorps event, was a smashing success. Moody added, “student/ campus organizations sponsor concerts, community activities and a variety of other events throughout the year and Ritchie Coliseum becomes very busy.”

Moody’s Mood

Moody has been at the University since 1997, joining the Campus Recreation Services team during the renovation period of Ritchie. Coming aboard before the completion of the remodeled coliseum allowed Moody the opportunity to attend many of the development progress meetings as construction was underway. “That helps me out a great deal today,” says Moody, “because it allowed me to obtain a better understanding of the structure and mechanics of the facility. So I’m fortunate in that respect.” Moody’s duties as Facility Manager consist of the coordination and interaction with a variety of support groups (i.e. student personnel, residential facilities, police department and facilities management) for the effective and efficient operation of these CRS South Campus facilities.

Other Popular Alternatives

“Reckord Armory,” reports Moody, “is another popular alternative recreation facility located on South Campus. With four full court basketball spaces and six volleyball courts, the Armory is also an ideal place to house informal pick-up games, as well as, Intramural Sports tournaments.” The Armory’s space is tremendous and it facilitates special events also. Montgomery County Public School System holds their annual indoor track meet in the Armory every January. The annual Fly Fishing Show, Commencement ceremonies, Ballroom dancing events and sport camps are examples of events and activities held at the Armory that are very successful.

When asked what were the richest and most rewarding aspects of managing CRS facili- ties, Moody replied, “Working with the students is one of the most rewarding parts of my position. Seeing the students develop and move on to bigger and better things is very exciting.” The CRS department is committed to student develop- ment and Moody takes that per- sonal. He interacts with his student employees in the capacity of mentor and confidant, talking to them about their scholastic achievement, character, attitude, and career goals. This creates an open atmosphere for successful communication between Moody and the student staff. Student ideas and input has also contributed a great deal successful operation of Ritchie Coliseum.

With the continual expansion of the University of Maryland’s Campus Recreation Services, it’s always good to know and understand the wealth of programs, facilities and support personnel that sur- rounds us on campus. As we acknowledge the richness of the historic Ritchie Coliseum we also realize that Ritchie (as well as all other CRS facilities) is more than a building. It is an EXPERIENCE! We invite you all to have a closer encounter with the CRS South Campus Experience. ❑
